Great 12v drill : Hitachi DS12DVF3 12-Volt Ni-Cad 3/8-Inch Cordless Drill/Driver Kit

This is my second Hitachi 12v drill and my fifth cordless drill overall. Needless to say I am sold on the quality of this drill. Right sized and powerful enough for most projects it is value priced and will provide several years of reliable service. My batteries eventually gave out on my previous drill; otherwise it is still 100% serviceable. Which brings me to a pet peeve; Hitachi and all other cordless tool manufactures please listen up! It is more expensive to replace or rebuild the two battery packs than it is to buy the drill with it's two battery packs, charger, flashlight, bits, and the case! Why is that? Why be green and recycle when manufactures price this way? It just does not make sense if you(manufactures) are even in the least bit environmentally responsible to support this type of pricing. This is just another fine example of the throw it away and buy new, even when the old product is fully serviceable, mentality endorsed by most manufacturers.

This drill is not for heavy drilling, the chuck does not grab well and bits tend to spin, but it is very convenient and light! For heavy work I still prefer a 120 volt drill.

Good one paper, Good on looks : Makita LXFD01CW 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2-Inch Driver-Drill Kit

I did alot of reading on cordless drills looking for something lightweight and powerful, I do cable splicing so weight was an important factor to me and this is the lightest 18V out there (my coworkers DeWalts weigh a ton next to this thing). Today I sent it back to amazon because it quit working, its a great drill in many ways, looks amazing, powerful, battery lasts a long time and charges quickly, lightweight and the belt clip is nice. But after 2 weeks of working outside in MN weather its shot, if I hit the trigger the flashlight comes on (which is useless by the by, it doesnt light the bit it lights right below it). Also it does have chuck wobble, my works not precise enough that it bothered me but forewarning to those of you who need to be right on, apparently some of these wobble and some don't. Thats my 2 cents, hope it can help you decide, I may have gotten a lemon, but I dont think I'll be going with Makita products again anytime soon.
